Why We Measure Udder Health Every Two Weeks, Not Once a Season

The question
Most seasonal dairy audits check udder health once, sometimes twice, a season. It is enough to catch what is already visible. It is not enough to catch what is starting.
We wanted to know what a fourteen-day interval would show that a ninety-day interval would not.
What we measured
cross a working sample of farms on the Herd Intelligence Programme, we ran somatic cell count (SCC) and clinical mastitis screening on a fixed two-week cycle — the same test, the same protocol, the same lab, every time. No farm knew in advance which animals would be sampled.
Each reading was logged against the animal, the farm, and the date. Flags were raised automatically when a reading crossed the threshold set by our veterinary partner, GADVASU. A flagged reading triggered a Response step — a same-week farm visit, a review of milking hygiene, and a follow-up test.


What we found
The figures below are illustrative, drawn from a representative sample cycle. See note at the end.
Over one full season, animals that were only checked at season-start and season-end showed a median SCC change of roughly 40% between the two readings — but the record was silent on what happened in between. Some of that movement was a slow climb. Some of it spiked mid-season and recovered before the next check.
On the two-week cycle, that middle period was visible. In the sample reviewed, just over a third of the flags raised over the season occurred on animals that would have tested within normal range at both a start-of-season and end-of-season check. Left at seasonal frequency, those cases would have gone unflagged entirely — not because nothing happened, but because the test window closed before the problem opened, and reopened before the test caught it again.
The two-week cycle also shortened the average time between an elevated reading and a Response visit from roughly six weeks (seasonal cadence, worst case) to under seven days.
What changed on the ground
Farms on the two-week cycle reported fewer clinical mastitis cases requiring antibiotic treatment over the season, because the Response step consistently arrived while the issue was still subclinical — a change in milking order, a review of teat-dip contact time, a look at bedding — rather than after it had progressed to a visible, treated case.
None of this required new equipment. It required a shorter interval between the same test, run the same way, on the same animals.
The takeaway
A single seasonal check tells you where an animal stands on two specific days. It says nothing about the eleven weeks in between. A two-week cycle does not just catch more — it catches things earlier, while the response is still a small one.
This is the same principle behind the wider HIP loop: measurement is only useful if it happens often enough to catch a problem while it is still a small problem. Udder health is the clearest example, because subclinical cases are, by definition, the ones a seasonal check is built to miss.
